I am an ubuntu user. For a while, I have been using pidgin as my msn (windows live) messenger client. One missing bit of pidgin is that it does not display the personal messages of people in my list. I have been ignoring it for a while, until I found another msn messenger client. Emesene (http://www.emesene.org/) allows me to read personal messages. I switched to emesene for a few months. The user interface is very similar to the one of pidgin-simple gtk style, but it is not quit the same. Emesene seems to also inherit its interface from the native msn messenger. I like pidgin displaying people pictures on the right rather on the left. I also like pidgin chat window displaying contact detail on the top of the window rather than on the right.
Today, I have found a solution.
msn-pecan (http://code.google.com/p/msn-pecan/) is an alternative MSN protocol plug-in for pidgin, which makes pidgin displays personal messages. So if you like pidgin and want a better support for MSN messenger, try msn-pecan.
I hope pidgin team incorporates msn-pecan to their official release. :)
msn-pecanFeatures include:
- Support for personal messages
- Server-side storage for display names (private alias)
- Partial direct connection support
- Improved network IO
- Improved error handling
- Network issues tested with netem
- GObject usage
